Second Generation Joins Management Team
St. James Winery is proud to announce another second generation member has been appointed to the Board of Directors, Peter Hofherr son of original founders of the winery, as Chief Financial Officer.
Peter is certainly no stranger to the winery or its operations. Growing up in the wine industry, Peter and his brothers worked the vineyards on a day to day basis helping their parents establish St. James Winery as one of the premiere wineries in the Midwest.
After attending Auburn University, graduating with a degree in Microbiology, he received his MBA from Georgia State University in 1989 with a degree in Finance. Presently is to receive his PhD from the University of Missouri in Agricultural Economics with emphasis in entrepreneurship.
After receiving his degrees, Peter was employed in the private sector as a consultant with the ninth largest accounting firm in the United States and later as a member of the management team at Cooper and Lybrand in Georgia for six years, a big six firm. Returning to the winery in 1995, he was appointed General Manager. He was instrumental in the reorganization of the overall business work flow of the winery along with the cellars and vineyards focusing on increased productivity and quality. Peter left the winery in 2001 to become Deputy Director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture and later became the Director of the Department for yet another two years.
Most recently, Peter has been the Director of Business Information Development Group (BRIDG). A group established by the state of Missouri to facilitate the basic and applied business and entrepreneurship research principles for consulting services in statewide centers.
St. James Winery is a wholly owned private family enterprise established in 1970 by the Hofherr family. With estate vineyards located in Missouri, the winery also has vineyards located in Arkansas and Michigan. Production capabilities exceed 200,000 cases annually and they are the largest winery within a twelve state area. St. James Winery is one of the most awarded wineries in the United States and presently ranks 4th in number of Gold medals won in the United States. Their vintages are currently distributed in fourteen states with further US expansion planned in 2008. Peter joins mother Patricia, Chairman of the Board, and brother Andrew, Chief Operations Officer in the management of the winery.
St. James Winery is owned and operated by the Hofherr Family since 1970, conveniently located on Interstate 44, on Old Historic Route 66, only 90 miles southwest of St. Louis, Missouri in St. James, Missouri. Harvest-The Good, Bad, & Ugly?
It´s over, yes it´s over, at least for another year. Despite the obstacles, the grape harvest has come and gone for 2007 and yes, it certainly is a year no one will forget.
April, ah yes, springtime. Flowers peeking through, trees beginning to bud, while the grass was greening up very nicely and yes, the grape vines had leaves on them. Spring was officially here and the weather could not have been nicer. Bam- temperatures plummeted to 27 degrees, not just one night, but two nights in a row. Below freezing temperatures with very little warning.
With Missouri´s harvest over, results were interesting to say the least this year. Andrew Meggitt, Vice President Winemaking and Product Development for St. James Winery stated "we have seen some unusual results this year with the crop. The Vignole grape is probably the best I have seen which is very exciting and the Norton has an incredible flavor. Our Chardonel is much more robust this year, so while our crop yield is down overall, we are seeing some other contributing factors that could be related to the spring freeze that are incredible"
The lowest yielding fruits were the Concord and Catawba grapes. Concord is the primary grape used in St. James Winery Velvet Red, and Catawba of course in their Pink Catawba, both very popular sellers. Due to the size of St. James Winery, the consumer will not see any difference or have any difficulty in obtaining any of their favor vintages. "We definitely have enough wine to meet the demand" replied Meggitt.
While location plays an important part in the viticulture aspect of growing grapes, St. James Winery being a little farther south definitely was an asset with the late freeze this year. Other vineyards to the North were hit harder according to reports loosing as much as 70 % of their crop while calculated losses at St. James Winery reflect a 30 % loss.
With over 2,000+ awards to date, St. James Winery was ranked number seven last year in number of Gold medals won in the top prestigious wine competitions, and to date is ranked number four. St. James Winery was named by Wine Business Monthly Magazine, February 2006, as the Number 4 Hottest Small Brand of 2005. St. James, Missouri - Braving 100 degree temperatures, over 125 invited guests, dignitaries, and politicians attended the official ribbon cutting ceremony commemorating the opening of the new tasting room and gift pavilion at St. James Winery August 1st.
Despite the tragic set back this spring with the catastropical freeze devastating much of Missouris grape crop for the year, the management and staff of St. James Winery made the conscious decision to go forth with their scheduled expansion plans for 2007.
Construction of a new front tasting room, expansion of the gift pavilion, and renovation of the existing structure were completed just prior to the ceremony. St. James Winery is committed not only to the industry, but to the betterment of the grape and agricultural program in the state of Missouri.
The new dual sided oak tasting bar measures over 40 feet long per side with a separate tasting bar for juices. The facility now boasts four oak check out stands complete with cork inlaid tops in keeping with a total wine theme. St. James Winery is excited to announce the R-Vino Express may be rolling into your
town shortly. A 34 foot customized recreational vehicle stocked and ready to go....
The latest in brand marketing, the R-Vino Express is a fully self contained unit which has been totally wrapped with logo´d and registered St. James Winery advertising materials. Its function, part of the new aggressive marketing campaign that has been released over the past few months, will be to attend festivals, fairs and special events promoting the St. James Winery line-up of vintages. Where permitted by law, winery personnel will be pouring samples of their offerings, either out of the R-Vino Express or on site at its various locations, or simply handing out promotional materials and gifts.
Jack Bonar, National Marketing Director stated "We are thrilled to have such a great marketing tool available to the public. It is definitely attracting attention already just on a few of its maiden runs in the area. We can´t wait to see the full impact this will have on our branding position creating further awareness of St. James Winery and our offerings."
No other winery in the Midwest has undertaken a marketing project of this magnitude and the initial response from our wholesalers, distributors, vendors and general public has been overwhelming. "Our calendar is already starting to fill up and if this is any indication of its success, it will be phenomenal" says Bonar.
The R-Vino Express may be requested from the winery to attend your special event through the promotions department subject to winery criteria. A calendar of events will also be posted on their web site to see where winery personnel will be pouring and the location of the R-Vino Express. If you would like further information on the R-Vino Express or to see about booking it for an event, please send an email to the winery at info@StJamesWinery.com or call 800.280.9463.

The New World International Wine Competition has been identified over the years as one of the top ten wine competitions in the United States, and "Americas Midwest Winery", St. James Winery is honored to be the most awarded winery of the entire competition.
With over 2,000 entries at the annual two-day event held in Southern California on March 18 & 19, 2007, "Its quite an achievement to win a medal or trophy. Only 249 wines won either a Gold medal or Best of Class" said Dr. Richard G. Peterson, Chief Judge. Wines entered into NWIWC are judged "double blind" meaning the judges do not know the identity of the wines they are judging and are never exposed to the bottle labels. The judges make descriptive notes for each wine and discuss them in detail until an award is unanimous, then recorded for that wine in the flight with none of the results released until the conclusion of the competition.
St. James Winery was awarded over 20 medals to include 3 Best of Class, 8 Gold, 6 Silver, and 3 Bronze Medals. Other well recognized top contenders competing against St. James Winery included, just to mention a few, Kendall-Jackson with 18 medals, Rodney Strong Vineyards with 10, Barefoot Cellars with 10, Fetzer Vineyards with 15, South Coast Winery with 15, and V. Sattui Winery with 17 total medals.* Additionally, several other Missouri and Midwestern regional wineries were entered into the competition with the highest other winery winning a total of 8 medals.
Andrew Hofherr, President of St. James Winery exclaimed "We are really excited about the results of this competition and to know our hard work is now also being recognized by others. Producing consistent quality wines at an excellent value has been our focus and our wines are being awarded accordingly with such prestige competitors".
St. James winners included in Best Of Class & Gold Medals were: 2005 Vintner"s Select Vignoles, 2003 Norton, and Velvet Red Port. Other Gold Medal winners included: Friendship School Blush, 2004 Late Harvest Vignoles, Sparkling Blush, Chardonel Port, and Strawberry wine. Silver Medal winners were: Velvet Red, Velvet White, Pink Catawba, Country Red, Friendship School White and Cherry wine, ending with the Bronze Medal wines of: Riesling, Friendship School Red, and Peach wine. St. James Winery is excited to announce plans for expansion of their present tasting room and gift shop renovations to be completed by June 1, 2007.
Located on the old Route 66, St. James Winery attracts thousands of tourists monthly to their present location just 90 miles west of St. Louis, MO on I -44. Rodney Lough, General Manager of St. James Winery stated "our expansion is to satisfy a growing need for a larger tasting room and gift shop carrying unique and wine related merchandise as demanded by our clientele".
The present structure, erected in 1972 with several additions and renovations since then, has served the winery and its clientele well; however with the ever increased tourism to wineries from individuals and charter bus lines, the time was right for this expansion. Total square footage in the tasting room and the retail gift shop will reach upwards of 10,000 square feet. With the expansion comes a total renovation of the interior of the present structure unifying an entirely new look. With high beamed ceilings, custom ceramic tiling, and special woodworking in the tasting bar areas, the new look will more closely resemble the "feel" of what the consumer has grown to expect when visiting a winery.
While exact figures as to the cost of the expansion are unavailable, budgeted funds have been closely scrutinized to provide the maximum esthetic value. One of the first signs of the expansion was the removal of the 58´ foot front sign. Present plans call for the reconstruction of the sign to the east of the winery to include "the grapes" that have become a brand for those passing by after exterior construction has been completed. Additional paved parking will also be included in this expansion.
With over 2,000+ awards to date, St. James Winery was named by Wine Business Monthly Magazine, February 2006, as the Number 4 Hottest Small Brand of 2005.

Today, the high demand for consistent quality sweet wines is answered continuously by St. James Winery as apparent in their latest market expansion into the state of Georgia.
The growth of St. James Winery within the past year has added three new states to their distribution list, Arkansas, Indiana, and now Georgia. A re-launch of their product line also occurred this summer in the state of Illinois, in particular, the Chicago market. With a total of nine states now offering St. James Winery vintages, demand continues to grow as evidenced by the phone calls received by prospective distributors in still more states to come.
Savannah Distributing Company, Inc. located in Savannah, GA. with a branch operation also in Atlanta, GA. has become the latest distributor to carry a portfolio of St. James Winery products. Henry Monsees, president of Savannah Distributing stated "We are pleased to represent St. James Winery and its line up of high quality products. The wines are very well made, the packaging tremendous, and these "farm" wines appeal to an important consumer segment in Georgia."
Entering the marketplace with six wines, Velvet Red, Velvet White, Pink Catawba, Country Red, Peach and Blackberry wine, retailers have been overwhelmed with the quality and taste difference in comparison to some of the other local state and regional wineries.
Dean Chalem, National Sales Director for St. James Winery stated "Savannah Distributing runs a quality and proficient operation which we are happy to be associated with. Represented by the best account executives in the area, we look forward to working closely with them in bringing our wines to the people of Georgia."

St. James Winery of St. James, MO. has migrated to the northeast bringing select vintages to the state of Indiana. Noted for their sweeter wines, St. James Winery will break into the market with five of their most popular varietals.
Originally hailing from Indiana, Patricia Hofherr, CEO of St. James Winery along with her late husband Jim, started St. James Winery in 1970 after Jim´s military duty brought him to Missouri. Graduating with a master´s degree in microbiology from Oklahoma University, Jim began his career in the beverage industry with Falstaff Brewery in St. Louis, MO later working in the wine industry for two different wineries in the area. At each of his positions, he built upon his knowledge of wine and winemaking until making the decision to open their own winery in an area known as "Little Italy of the Ozarks."
Italian immigrants settled around St. James, MO over a century ago and by the early 1920´s there were over 2,000 acres of vineyards under cultivation. Today, the Italian influence is still palpable in the area and the schoolhouse used in the logo of St. James Winery is a derivative of the original schoolhouse built by the immigrants to educate their children in the area, still standing in part of the estate vineyards.
Son Andrew, now President of the company, returned to St. James after receiving a degree in viticulture at the University of Arkansas. He is one of the utmost authorities in the nation today on viticulture and is commissioned to speak on this topic.
With over 14,000 square feet of cellar boasting over 600,000 gallons of fermenting tank space, St. James Winery is presently undergoing a cellar expansion. Purchasing three new stainless steel fermenting tanks of 25,000 gallons each, these are some of the largest in the Midwest region. The winery is one of the largest wineries in a 12 state area.
Two of the most popular wines, Velvet Red and Velvet White along with Country Red and Country White as well as Pink Catawba will be making their debut in area liquor, convenience, and grocery stores almost immediately. St. James Winery has chosen Monarch Beverage Co., Inc. as their exclusive wholesale representative in the state. Jeremy Cutler, Sales Manager-Wine Division for Monarch Beverage Co. stated "Monarch is very excited about the opportunity to distribute St. James wines in Indiana. This is a Mid-West winery that produces quality wines at a great price. The wines have a sweet and fruity profile and are approachable which will appeal to many Indiana consumers."
Rodney Lough, General Manager for St. James Winery stated "We are extremely pleased regarding our advancement into Indiana and look forward to a long and lasting relationship with Monarch. Partnering with them was a natural for us due to their overall reputation in the state and knowledge of quality wines. We feel the consumer acceptance will be strong once they experience the St. James difference."
The Indy wine competition held this past August confirms St. James Winery position in the industry by awarding their wines over 22 medals in Indiana alone. Four of the wines being introduced were award winning in 2006 with Velvet White a Gold Medal, Country White a Silver, and Velvet Red and Pink Catawba both Bronze.
With over 2,000+ awards to date, St. James Winery was recently named by Wine Business Monthly Magazine, February 2006, as the Number 4 Hottest Small Brands of 2005. St. James Winery has surpassed all other wineries, not only in Missouri, but in the entire 12 state Midwest Region in terms of case volume.
